Medieval History

Robin Imse

6th -8th Grade

Textbook: Various. See description.

Materials: Books listed below.

Supply Fee: $10 per year

Length: 1 hour class

Class Description: This class will use Beautiful Feet curriculum’s Medieval History Intermediate pack as the outline. From the website:

“The Middle Ages was a very busy time full of change! Brilliant minds lived between the years 400 and 1522, the years that are covered in this study, and by reading some of the best literature on the subject, students will be encouraged to discuss new ideas and social changes. In this course homeschooling students will learn about King Richard, King Arthur, Saladin, Queen Eleanor, Joan of Arc, Shahrazad and others. They will learn about Martin Luther who revealed a new way to approach God and about John Wycliffe who organized the Bible.”

Homework will consist of vocabulary, map work, craft projects, and whatever else I can find for us to do to make this time period come alive!

We will be reading several books over the course of the year. Please have the book or books before the beginning of the month we read them.

Aug: Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo
(Note: This is a monster story and there are battle scenes. Although this is a fairly kid friendly version, for sensitive readers, I’d recommend prereading.)

Sept: King Arthur & His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green
One Thousand and One Arabian Nights by Gerldine McCaughrean

Oct: Queen Eleanor: Independent Spirit of the Medieval World by Polly Brooks
The Adventures of Robin Hood by Roger Lancelyn Green

Nov: The Magna Charta by James Daugherty

Dec: Knight: The Medieval Warrior’s Unofficial Manual by Michael Prestwich

Jan: Adam of the Road by Elizabeth Gray
Morning Star of the Reformation by Andy Thompson

Feb: Crispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi
Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, Adapted by Barbara Cohen

Mar: Joan of Arc by Kathleen Kudlinski

Apr: Fine Print, A Story about Johann Gutenberg by Joann Johansen Burch
The Trumpeter of Krakow by Eric P. Kelly

All of these books can be found at Beautiful Feet Books and at Thrift Books. I’ve also found a lot of their curriculum on Ebay. (The curriculum is a 35 week course, so, unfortunately, I had to cut some books but I’m going to try to cover those subjects in class.)

Teacher Biography: My name is Robin Imse (pronounced sort of like saying the letters MZ). I’ve been homeschooling our four kids since our oldest was in pre-k and now he’s looking at graduating high school! While my educational background is more art focused, I love history and literature, too. I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, but the Lord moved our family to Oklahoma a few years ago and we are so thankful to be here!
