Class Description: The class curriculum is based on Beautiful Feet’s Early American History Intermediate pack, BJU United States History, 4th Edition, A Patriot’s History of the United States by Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen and various other books including first-hand accounts. With the aid of historical novels, lectures, mini-presentations, and media, we step through early American history, from pre-Columbus to the early 1800’s!
We’ll cover:
Native Americans prior to Columbus
Age of Discovery
Colonial America
The Revolutionary War
Early 19th Century exploration
with pit stops for the Golden Age of Piracy, the French Revolution, and whatever other rabbit trails I can find to make the class fun and keep it interesting!
We’ll touch on some difficult topics like slavery, war with the Native Americans, and the Reign of Terror. I aim to be accurate without being gratuitous. Some books include descriptions of prisoner ships and epidemics. Please keep this in mind for sensitive students.
Homework: There is a LOT of reading in this class. The majority of the homework is reading novels that correlate with the time period we’re discussing in class. Homework will also involve vocabulary work, map work, and 2-3 projects/presentations per semester.
Books we’ll be reading:
Aug: Pocahontas by Joseph Bruchac
Sep: Almost Home by Wendy Lawton
Oct The Kidnapped Prince by Ann Cameron
Poor Richard by James Daugherty
Nov: Sophia’s War by Avi
Dec: Black Heroes of the American Revolution by Burke Davis
Jan: Fever 1793 by Laurie Anderson
Feb: Of Courage Undaunted by James Daugherty
Mar: Carry on, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Latham
Mary and the Trail of Tears by Andrea L. Rogers (Subject to change)
Apr: There will be one more book, too, but I’m trying to figure out which one
All these books can be found at Beautiful Feet Books, Thrift Books, and on eBay.

Teacher Biography: My name is Robin Imse and I’ve homeschooled our four kiddos for about the last 20 years, and now I’m looking at graduating my 2nd! While my educational background is more art focused, I love history and literature, too. I spend my little spare time reading a WIDE variety of books as well as sewing and embroidery. I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, but the Lord moved our family to Oklahoma in 2019 and we are so thankful to be here!
