Early American History

Robin Imse

7th – 10th Grade

Textbook:

Materials: 3 ring binder, paper, and books listed below

Supply Fee: $10 per year

Length: 1 hour Class

Class Description: The class curriculum is based on Beautiful Feet’s Early American History Intermediate pack, BJU United States History, 4th Edition, A Patriot’s History of the United States by Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen and various other books including first-hand accounts. With the aid of historical novels, lectures, mini-presentations, and media, we step through early American history, from pre-Columbus to the early 1800’s!

We’ll cover:
Native Americans prior to Columbus
Age of Discovery
Colonial America
The Revolutionary War
Early 18th Century
with pit stops for the Golden Age of Piracy, the French Revolution, and whatever other rabbit trails I can find to make the class fun and keep it interesting!

We’ll touch on some difficult topics like slavery, war with the Native Americans, and the Reign of Terror. I aim to be accurate without being gratuitous. Some books include descriptions of prisoner ships and epidemics. Please keep this in mind for sensitive students.

Homework: There is a LOT of reading in this class. The majority of the homework is reading novels that correlate with the time period we’re discussing in class. Homework will also involve vocabulary work, map work, and some projects. A few presentations will be done throughout the year as well.

I have two optional tests, one before Christmas break and one at the end of the year, that go over what we’ve learned for the year. I do send out a study guide in advance.

Books we’ll be reading:
Aug: Pocahontas by Joseph Bruchac

Sep: Almost Home by Wendy Lawton

Oct The Kidnapped Prince by Ann Cameron
Poor Richard by James Daugherty

NovSophia’s War by Avi

Dec: Black Heroes of the American Revolution by Burke Davis

Teacher Biography: My name is Robin Imse (pronounced sort of like saying the letters MZ). I’ve been homeschooling our four kids since our oldest was in pre-k and now he’s looking at graduating high school! While my educational background is more art focused, I love history and literature, too. I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, but the Lord moved our family to Oklahoma a few years ago and we are so thankful to be here!
