Chemistry

David Cartwright

9th – 12th Grade

Prerequisite: Algebra I required. There are a lot of equations in this material.
Physical science or equivalent is recommended.

Textbook: Discovering Design with Chemistry, published by Berean Builders

Materials: 3 ring binder
Scientific calculator

Supply Fee: $50 per year for the use of equipment and lab supplies

Length: 1 1/2 hour Class

Class Description: This class is an overview of chemistry, and will include studies of kinetics, the periodic table, chemical reactions, the nature of matter, significant figures, thermodynamics, stoichiometry, moles, enthalpy, entropy, etc… It is a lab science course, and lab reports will be due about every month. It is designed as a college-preparatory class.

Requirements: Required materials are a 3-ring binder to take notes in. Students should always bring their texts to class. A scientific calculator is also necessary; but a graphing calculator is better because it can be used for upper-level math courses as well. Students and parents are expected to check their emails at least twice a week.

Homework: Students should expect to spend about an hour a day on this class every school day. Problems should be worked every week, and homework over each chapter is due every two weeks. Tests are every two chapters (about once a month) and are administered at home by a parent.

I will approach issues of origins from a Young Earth Creation (YEC) worldview, that is, I believe that God created the world just as He said he did in the scriptures. In my classes, I strive to convey to students a basic understanding of that worldview, presenting evidence and reasoning to support this viewpoint while also discussing an old earth worldview and comparing the two. I also recognize that the body of Christ is very diverse, and I invite students and parents to think critically on the issue of origins. “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” -1 Peter 3:15-16

Teacher Biography: Born in Oklahoma, I was homeschooled all my life until senior year, when I took concurrent enrollment at OBU. I graduated SNU with a bio-chem-math degree, and I’ve been teaching since 2008. My wife and three children attend Covenant Community Church in Yukon, and we homeschool our children!
