Class Description: Discover art history by studying historical art techniques! Students will need to practice assigned drawing in their sketchbook daily, every week

August:

• Introductions/Rules/Suminagashi prints for cover of timeline. 
  Refresher lesson on elements of art, with focus on line, contour lines and cross-contour lines.  Blind contour drawing, contour drawing, and the importance of observation. 
• Basic shapes (graphite)/Shape to Form: (sphere, cube, cylinder, ellipse, triangle, cone)
• Shape to Form (mixed shapes with charcoal) ; Charcoal Reductions: set up still life, tape, tone, block 
• Charcoal Reductions: block cont., core shadow, cast shadow, highlights, etc. to follow 

Ancient Cultures: Ancient Near East, Egyptian and Aegean

September: 

• Charcoal Reductions
• Shapes, revisited: White chalk pastel on black paper
• Colored Pencil Pumpkin/ How to set up a Still Life using a shadow box

• Half Leaf
• Carving Medieval Lettering/Gold Leaf

Renaissance: Proto-Renaissance, Early/High Italian Renaissance and Northern Renaissance

January:

• Van Gough Master Copies with Toned Paper and Walnut Ink
